I’m Better Blind: The Real Talk Peer Support Group
Group Description
Because sometimes, the only people who "get it" are the ones walking the same path. I’m Better Blind: The Real Talk Peer Support Group is a relaxed, open-mic style space for blind and visually impaired individuals. This isn't a lecture or a formal class—it’s a gathering of peers who understand that while vision loss has made us stronger, the daily obstacles are real.
Whether you are new to vision loss or have been navigating it for years, this is your space to share the "unfiltered" side of blindness—the frustrations, the hacks, the laughs, and the hurdles that sighted society doesn't always see. Come for the honest conversation, stay for the community, shared solutions, and mutual empowerment.
Meeting Details
- Frequency: Monthly
- Day: Every 2nd Saturday of the month
- Time: 11:00 AM Central Time (CT)
- Format: Hosted virtually via Zoom (A relaxed space to connect easily from home)
Core Topics & Discussion Themes
With an open-floor, organic approach, we don't stick to rigid agendas. Instead, we talk about what you want to bring to the table each month, including:
- Relatable Challenges: Discussing the daily obstacles only we understand—from navigating tech glitches and screen reader quirks to handling awkward social interactions.
- Crowdsourced Solutions: Sharing practical, lived "how-to" ideas and everyday life hacks to overcome specific barriers and increase independence.
- Authentic Empowerment: Lifting each other up through honest, grounded conversation and real peer encouragement, not just empty platitudes.
- The Unfiltered Reality: A place to vent safely, laugh at the absurdities, and celebrate the wins with people who truly get it.
Group Guidelines & Values
To ensure a positive, welcoming, and safe environment for everyone, all participants agree to the following pillars:
- Confidentiality: What is shared in the circle stays in the circle to protect everyone's privacy.
- Mutual Respect: We celebrate diverse perspectives, varying degrees of vision loss, and different stages of life. Every individual’s journey is valid.
- Active Listening: Give everyone the room to speak honestly and share their unfiltered experiences without immediate judgment.
- Peer Support, Not Professional Therapy: This is a peer-led group focused on shared lived experiences, community resilience, and practical mutual support.
